MEET THE ARTIST
Justine's work emerges from a life steeped in stories and a deep sensitivity to the emotional and spiritual nuances of human experience. From early childhood, she was drawn to faces and figures, compelled by an intuitive hunger to understand what lay beneath the surface. Her artistic training reflects this curiosity, a diverse patchwork woven from creative classes, live figure drawing, books, and online resources rather than a singular academic path. With formal degrees in Psychology and Spiritual Formation, Justine spent decades as a spiritual guide and mentor, holding space for others through their seasons of transformation.
In midlife, a growing practice of painting sparked a renewal, a reorienting toward being fully alive. Justine’s growing creative practice became an act of reclaiming what had been fragmented. Her emerging body of abstracted figurative paintings explores the tension between control and connection, inviting others to reconnect with what is real, soulful, and alive. Justine lives and works in San Francisco, creating from a studio in her home where daily life and the call to make are beautifully intertwined.
CREATIVE PROCESS
Justine's creative process starts with something brewing in her on a soul level, unformed and raw. Using a variety of tools and mediums, from palette knives to eye droppers, ink to oils, she journeys through layered materials within a singular painting.
Often beginning with free flowing, spontaneous layers she uses mediums that are by nature less controllable. This allows her to operate through an unconscious, soul layer that knows better what's trying to be said. She holds the inspiration loosely, letting it interact with the natural elements of pigment, canvas, air, and liquid.
After sitting with that layer, she contributes more thought and intention as a response, moving toward refined mark making with oil, acrylic, or line tools, adding concrete story elements and symbols while letting that intuitive, emotional foundation remain at the center of the piece.
